Ideation
Catalogue Ideation
The first version of the catalogue was inspired in a common catalogue with an image of the blocks we have, the name of the designer, the dimension of the parts and its color. Some blank spaces were also left for the case owner to fill in his own parts.
The catalogue was updated with new renders every session, making it more formal and translating the designed blocks into reality.
For the final catalogue, which purpose is mainly for him to be able to show the blocks and have them organised there was ideation made on the format of it.
The three of them were presented to him,and he chose the smallest one in which you could see one block per page,
Then some iterations were made on the design fitting more with the pantone cards.
Building Cards Ideation
Initially, building cards were designed in three different categories; easy, average, hard. The cards contain words that need to be built by the players. This idea was chosen to stimulate the player's creativity. By just giving a word, the player can determine himself how something will look like.
Although the building assignment was a nice concept, it did not work as expected. With only one word, Arne did not know how to create the correct shape. Which resulted in not building the assignment, but building his own shapes.
After some new ideation on the building cards, the group came up with the idea of the game 'tangram'. This game shows only solid black shapes and the player need to remake the shape with the blocks. The difficulty is that it is not clear where each block needs to be placed. Since tangram is a 2D game, it was decided to start with a side view of the shape that needs to be created. Instead of making the shape solid black, it was made in rainbow colours, since that is Arne's favourite colour.
This tangram idea work quite well, the only thing that was hard for Arne was the rainbow colour. Because of the different colours in the shape, Arne did get confused about the blocks he had to use.
The next version of the game was making 3D building assignment. Arne did understand the 2D assignment really quick, so it was decided to place different 2D views on one side of the card and on the other side of the card a 3D view of the shape was placed. All shapes were made completely black, to make the assignment a bit more challenging.
This new version of the building assignments worked really well and Arne liked the challenge.
Backpack ideation
After the game is played, it should be stored properly so some sort of case has to be created. For this some ideation was done. The most straightforward idea was to make a box where all the blocks would fit in. After discussing this with the parents it was pointed out that it would be desirable to have a casing that enables a quick clean up. When using a box, all the blocks have to be stacked inside individually to make them fit neatly. This is why the idea of a backpack came up as this allows the user to simply throw all the blocks inside without any real effort.
Several concepts of backpacks came out and the designs were brought to our case to select his favourite design. Usually the communication takes quite some time but this time the choice was made immediately and with certainty. The design of the cylinder shaped backpack was chosen.
